Our Mission

Imagination Library of Montgomery County, Maryland

We want children to enjoy and share the magic of books. Our goal is to provide free, age-appropriate books to children from birth to age 5. Each month a carefully selected, new book will arrive in the mail, so a child can build his/her own library regardless of family income. We hope to foster the parent/child connection through a love of books and reading aloud that will contribute to pre-reading and school readiness skills. By developing literacy skills, books can engage the imagination and contribute to a brighter future.

A Bit of History

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library was started by Dolly in her home state of Tennessee over 20 years ago. She felt that the seeds of children’s dreams could often be found in books. She was further inspired by her own beloved father who could not read or write. Dolly developed a program so that every preschooler in Sevier County, TN would receive their own books on a regular basis. It quickly expanded throughout Tennessee, and many communities asked if the program could be replicated in their states. Imagination Library was then offered to any community that would support a local affiliate. Imagination Library of Montgomery County, Maryland was born, and the first children were registered in May, 2015.

Today, there are over 1,600 affiliates like ours in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Australia. Over 1,000,000 books are mailed out every month, and over 95,000,000 books have been distributed over the years. That's 1 book every 3 seconds! It’s no wonder that Dolly is proud to be called The Book Lady. She remains committed to the idea that books can help children “Dream More, Learn More, Care More and Be More.”

Book Notes - Books That Have Been Mailed Out Recently

**Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

This book captures the magic of the first snowfall of the season, and the pleasure experienced by a little boy in the city on a very snowy day. It was the Caldecott Award in 1963 and remains a timeless favorite.

**Baking Day at Grandma's by Anika Denise

Three bear siblings can't wait to get to Grandma's to help make holiday cookies. They pour, mix and stir - and take breaks for hot cocoa and dancing. The sweets are even better when shared.

**Coat of Many Colors by Dolly Parton and Brooke Boynton-Hughes

The full color pictures bring to life one of Dolly's favorite songs based on her Tennessee childhood. A little girl's mother makes her a colorful coat out of rags, and teaches her that riches can come in many forms.

Often-Asked Question: Will books arrive at the same time every month?

The short answer is probably not. Book distribution is arranged from the headquarters in Tennessee. Books are mailed by the least expensive bulk mail rate. This means it is up to individual post offices as to when delivery will occur - usually delayed after first and second class mail. Delivery times can be especially varied during the holiday season. Children in the same general area may get book delivery at different times. Your patience is much appreciated.
