Our Mission

Imagination Library of Montgomery County, Maryland

We want children to enjoy and share the magic of books. Our goal is to provide free, age-appropriate books to children from birth to age 5. Each month a carefully selected, new book will arrive in the mail, so a child can build his/her own library regardless of family income. We hope to foster the parent/child connection through a love of books and reading aloud that will contribute to pre-reading and school readiness skills. By developing literacy skills, books can engage the imagination and contribute to a brighter future.

A Bit of History

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library was started by Dolly in her home state of Tennessee in 1995. She felt that the seeds of children’s dreams could often be found in books. She was further inspired by her own beloved father who could not read or write. Dolly developed a program so that every preschooler in Sevier County, TN would receive their own books on a regular basis. It quickly expanded throughout Tennessee, and many communities asked if the program could be replicated in their states. Imagination Library was then offered to any community that would support a local affiliate. Imagination Library of Montgomery County, Maryland was born, and the first children were registered in May, 2015.

Today, there are over 1,600 affiliates like ours in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Australia and the Republic of Ireland. Over 1,400,000 books are mailed out every month, and over 117,000,000 books have been distributed over the years!! It’s no wonder that Dolly is proud to be called The Book Lady. She remains committed to the idea that books can help children “Dream More, Learn More, Care More and Be More.”

Book Notes - Books That Have Been Mailed Out Recently

**THE RABBIT LISTENED by Cori Doerrfeld

This book will help children process thoughts on loss. When something terrible happens, Taylor doesn't know where to turn. Taylor doesn't feel like chatting. Several animals try to tell him how to process loss, but nothing seems quite right until a rabbit comes along. All the rabbit does is listen - just what Taylor needs.

With the subtitle "A Messy Story About Colors and Counting," it's easy to guess the subject of this book. Dog seems to be underfoot when something messy and colorful is around. There are 10 spots on his white coat to count before Dog's bath.

Often-Asked Question: Can I request books related to my child's special interests?

Unfortunately, you cannot. The inexpensive printing and distribution of books by Dolly Parton's Imagination Library headquarters is based on volume (over 1,000,000 books each month) and the year the child is born. ALL children with the same birth year receive the same book. The system cannot accomodate individual choices or changes. We hope you find a wide variety of authors and topics overall within the Imagination Library book list.
