Our Mission

Imagination Library of Montgomery County, Maryland

We want children to enjoy and share the magic of books. Our goal is to provide free, age-appropriate books to children from birth to age 5. Each month a carefully selected, new book will arrive in the mail, so a child can build his/her own library regardless of family income. We hope to foster the parent/child connection through a love of books and reading aloud that will contribute to pre-reading and school readiness skills. By developing literacy skills, books can engage the imagination and contribute to a brighter future.

A Bit of History

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library was started by Dolly in her home state of Tennessee over 20 years ago. She felt that the seeds of children’s dreams could often be found in books. She was further inspired by her own beloved father who could not read or write. Dolly developed a program so that every preschooler in Sevier County, TN would receive their own books on a regular basis. It quickly expanded throughout Tennessee, and many communities asked if the program could be replicated in their states. Imagination Library was then offered to any community that would support a local affiliate. Imagination Library of Montgomery County, Maryland was born, and the first children were registered in May, 2015.

Today, there are over 1,600 affiliates like ours in the United States, Canada, Great Britain and Australia. Over 1,200,000 books are mailed out every month, and over 104,000,000 books have been distributed over the years!! It’s no wonder that Dolly is proud to be called The Book Lady. She remains committed to the idea that books can help children “Dream More, Learn More, Care More and Be More.”

Book Notes - Books That Have Been Mailed Out Recently

**The First Strawberries - retold by Joseph Bruchac, pictures by Anna Vojtech

This is a retelling of a Cherokee legend which explains how strawberries came to be. According to this legend, long ago the first man and woman quarrelled. The sun sent delicious berries to tempt the woman and slow her retreat.

**Truck Stop by Anne Russell, illustrations by Melissa Iwai

Ever wondered what life is like at a truck stop? In this selection, a boy who works at a stop along with his parents describes what the day is like. You don't have to be a car/truck enthusiast to enjoy this story.

Often-Asked Question: I am not now in one of your covered zip code areas. When will you be in my neighborhood?

Our enrollment depends entirely on the funds we are able to raise. We do not want to enroll children when we are not confident that we have the money to serve them the entire time they are in the program (until they turn five). We are always looking for sources of revenue. We are also always talking with various officials about funding/taking the program Countywide. We look forward to the day when we cover all of Montgomery County's preschoolers.
